This sweet girl right here came to my wedding... as a babysitter for my five nephews and baby niece as they traveled here to Phoenix from California for our big day. I got to know Katie and Tyler a little better several years later when they visited Arizona one summer and I had the privilege of shooting their engagement portraits. I was tickled when they reached out to me to shoot an anniversary session for them during my trip to California in July of this year.
Things I want to remember from my time with Tyler and Katie...
How much they love each other. Like really love each other, in all the right ways. I could tell just by walking up and down the main street of Carpinteria with them for an hour, how much they mutually adore, respect and honor one another. If I may, in this culture I think their generation of lovers all too often gets it so painfully wrong, it's refreshing to see when kids get it right. Kids -- listen to me -- what am I OLD or something? They aren't kids. They are a married man and woman. But you know what I mean.
That orange flower is apparently the state flower of California, and it is apparently illegal to pick one. Good thing I found these on the ground already...
The skateboarders that were politely waiting for us to take the picture before skating by, but then I made them skate by like six times so I could get the shots I wanted.
The sky was unforgiving, not one drop of sunlight. Katie and Tyler both were troopers, and trusted me to make beautiful photos for them regardless of the dull sky! I think I've said it before that the light in California is quite different from the light I'm used to shooting in here in the Phoenix area!
We laughed, a lot.
How I know they are going to be such amazing parents some day ("later" they said). They promised I could photograph their future babies and I am going to hold them to it.
