Fall is here! Well, not quite, it's still hitting 100 degrees almost every day. But doesn't this beautiful orchard + perfect evening light give you a glimpse, an anticipation, that it's soon going to be beautiful outside and we'll be planning feasts and get-togethers and sitting outside on our porches each evening?
A few things I want to remember about my session with the J family...
How when we arrived, I kind of felt this sense like I was breaking the rules. This orchard is part of a private working farm, and even though the rest of the farm is accessible to photographers with a day-permit or annual pass, the orchard is kind of like a holy grail of private locations, only open to photographers with a special permit on very limited dates. I'm a rule follower by nature, and even though it's walking distance from my house, I have never once taken clients into this orchard; so I felt like mega VIP status being in there with my camera after peeking in from the outside for so long.
How Liam (age three) kept calling me 'Aunt Julie'. Now, full disclosure he does have a real Aunt Julie, but I'm going to pretend it was because he liked me sooooo much that I earned a term of endearment from him in two minutes. Liam, you have my heart forever.
Giuliana (age five) and her gorgeous face. She's gorgeous when she's grinning, she's gorgeous when she's pensive. And her gorgeous mom. They're all just gorgeous.
Every time I asked the kids to tell each other a secret, it was some version of 'I love you'. Every time. And I'm pretty sure both mama and I got teary eyed every time.
How mom and dad were both so relaxed when I did some of my games and prompts for candid photos. I really love when grownups trust my process and are willing to let their guards down for me, because the kids pick up on it, and if I may be so bold to say: amazing images come of it. [And it's way more fun for everyone!]
It was hot out. The kids were rockstars. I was so proud of them.
Liam's dance moves juxtaposed with his serious face. In the black and white portrait below, what you see is a handsome little fox -- what you don't see is a little three-year-old booty shaking to the music like there's no tomorrow.
Giuliana's immediate willingness to tickle both mom and dad, and the giggles that followed.
We scheduled this session that morning. And they showed up looking like this. Without going shopping. I don't know about you all, but there is no way I could perfectly style myself, my husband and my kids using only what was already in my house. Props to this mama and her always-on sense of style. And the rest of you mamas, don't worry you'll have more time to plan, and I have a Style Guide to help you prep -- because if you're anything like me, you'll want both.
Thank you J Family, for letting me make pictures for you!! It's families like you that make me love what I do SO VERY MUCH!
