I went to high school with Jack and Sam's mama, and I've seen her two adorable kids grow up in iPhone photos over the last five years on social media. I and was thrilled to be able to connect with her and make arrangements to photograph the kiddos while my family was on vacation in Southern California a few miles from where they live!
Things I would like to remember from my time with Jack and Samantha...
Jack shares a birthday with my five-year-old so I knew he had just had a birthday, which was fun to talk about. I also found out that they both love legos and the Trolls soundtrack.
Sam, age two, took direction very well, and would respond "okay" in her little raspy voice when I asked her to stand somewhere or do a movement. I was also extremely impressed at how she did not resist or protest when mama busted out the hairbrush and put her hair in a pony. Maybe she could teach my toddler a little something about having your hair done.
There's something so special about a big brother / little sister relationship. Even in just the half hour I spent with them, I could tell how much little Sammy adores and trusts her big brother Jack; and how much he looks out for her. Warmed my heart.
How incredibly different the light is in coastal southern California than the light here in the Phoenix area. It was a good exercise for the math part of my photographer brain to get all my settings right.
When we neared the end of our session, I was hoping to drag it out a little longer so I offered them a little treat from the stash I keep in my camera bag (with mom's permission). But when I looked it my bag, I was remiss to find that I had no fruit snacks, and no smarties... all I had was tic tacs. Now, my own children love tic tacs, so I thought it would be a win. But Jack and Sam were mortified at the candy that "tastes like toothpaste". Like, mortified. Tears, spitting, "whyyyyyyy would you give me this"..... I'm pretty sure that's all they'll remember me for -- the lady who fed them toothpaste candy. I'm so sorry guys. I hope you'll forgive me soon.
And you sure are cute.
